Ezza’s Life Updates

I actually had a review planned to be posted today but that went out the window ever since I got the news….

I GOT THE JOB!

Which job you ask? It’s the same job I applied for at this company during a walk-in interview. I really, honestly thought I had flunked the interview and you can imagine my surprise when they told me I successfully got the job. I was happy, shocked, ecstatic, on cloud 9 because hellloooo!!! out of hundreds that applied I GOT IT! If that isn’t an ego boost I have no idea what is but then it dawned on me, I have to resign and that left me feeling torn.

I like my current job. I have time flexibility. My boss trusts me to do things on time and for me to handle it on my own. I know everybody here. I have been here for 1 year and 9 months. I was here before there were even computers on the receptionist desk or heck even drinking water from Coway. I was here during their grand opening when all the VP’s came, was here when I helped my boss prepped for the VP’s dinner and such. Was here for the Raya celebration at the restaurant next door. I was the one that handled all the utilities, handled all the eptw’s, called hotels for room bookings for staff. So, you can understand why I feel so torn.

This feels like a break up a legit break up. Not me resigning my job for a better one. It feels like I am saying;

“No, it’s not you. It’s me. I want more from life and from this relationship and right now you can’t give me that and so I have to go.”

I am so sad, emphasis on the ‘am’ and not the ‘was’. I keep thinking I won’t be able to chill at level 3 anymore with my friends during lunch hour or just sleep. I am also scared. What if the new job won’t extend my contract? The contract I am given was only 8 months.

I don’t exactly love my job but I love and care about the people I work with. They have taught me so much and I am just so heartbroken I have to leave. I swear right now my heart is so broken. I didn’t expect resigning from a job will be this hard. I thought it would be a breeze. I mean it’s just a job.

Huh.

Top Ten Books On My Monsoon – Durian Season TBR list

toptentuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and The Bookish and this weeks topic is “Top Ten Books On My Monsoon – Durian Season TBR list” okay not really it was originally “Top Ten books On My Fall TBR List” but I had to tweak it becausseeee of the reasons below 😀

Okay first of all I live in Miri, Sarawak which in turn is in Malaysia which is located in Southeast Asia and let me tell you about our 3 main seasons here:

Monsoon season

Image result for malaysia monsoon season

In Miri it is not as bad as West Malaysia (which is where the picture above is located, Johor to be exact) but just expect to be chillin indoors for awhile unless you don’t mind being blown away by the wind

Haze season

Image result for malaysia monsoon season

Haze season is the worst! Even in Miri. You can’t see shit, you can’t breathe. Not a pleasant season.

and most importantly

DURIAN SEASON!

Image result for musang king durian

It’s Durian man. ENOUGH SAID!

So, now if I am not mistaken we are currently in transition between the monsoon season towards the Durian season but I might be wrong, weather has been pretty funky lately with Hurricane Harvey and Irma.

Anyhoots, let’s just moooovvvee on to the TBR list.

Okay, I have recently watched the revamped film adaptation of IT from Stephen King’s novel and….

Also helped that the actor playing the new Pennywise is pretty easy on the eyes.

Image result for bill skarsgård

Not so in his Pennywise get-up but still one can appreciate a good looking Swedish man especially one who has been single since the dawn of time.

Image result for new pennywise the clown

So, anyways I watched it and now I am in my Stephen King phase. I have overcome my trauma of reading From a Buick 8 and am now ready to tackle on his other works! Such as…

23694795

26891910

1223681

16130549

28094574

  • IT (DUH! I loved the movie so obviously you gotta go back and appreciate the source material)

843489

  • Misery (I watched the movie adaptation for this one too and LOVED IT! The suspense the feel, THE TERROR!!!!!)

28119720

  • Thinner (Not much reason aside from I already own it and might as well read it)

Now, I didn’t put Carrie or The Dark Towers series in because, one, I feel that Carrie already has so much exposure and I know what you’re gonna say. IT has a lot of exposure too, I agree with that, BUT IT is a mammoth of a book with its pages clocking in at MINIMUM 1100 pages whereas Carrie is only roughly 200-ish pages and for The Dark Towers series, well it’s a series and I am not good in keeping up with a series especially if they ain’t free and publicly available at the library.

So far these are books I am planning to read before the end of the year is up. It might take me awhile what with saving my money and buying them and whatnot. Before I log off this post, tell me which Stephen King book are you interested in reading and most importantly DID YOU WATCH THE MOVIE IT??? DID YOU LIKE IT????

Is their love strong enough to withstand not only the Lords of Chaos but also Raphael’s own demons?

Review

Elizabeth Hoyt has completely captured my heart with her Maiden Lane series. I have read three book from this series; Wicked Intentions and Duke of Pleasure and obviously now Duke of Desire, and none of it I have read in the correct order but it didn’t matter because once I read it I was swept away with the current of FEELS!

A little backstory regarding me and this book. I had just finished Duke of Pleasure and I read at the end that Iris was kidnapped! And I was already HOOKED!!!! and obviously she was soon rescued by none other than Raphael de Chartres, the Duke of Dyemore!!!!! I was already beyond intrigued by this man; was he good? was he bad? what happened to his face? how can a man be so handsome AND beautiful????? WHY IS HE SO MYSTERIOUS????? and then BAM! Elizabeth be all ‘well that is all the teaser I am going to give, you just have to wait until the next book comes out’.

Boy, did I wait. I scoured Netgalley EVERY.SINGLE.DAY in hopes that maybe, maybe today will be the day that it is out on Netgalley and lo and behold!

Image result for waiting gif

The day arrived and I requested it but alas! I had to wait AGAIN! My fear that I wouldn’t be approved gnawed at me. I was worried so worried what if my credentials wasn’t enough. What if the publishers didn’t think my previous reviews weren’t good enough and rejected my request?????!!! I WAITED FOR SO LONGGGGGGG FOR THIS BOOK. SO. LONG.

Image result for impatiently waiting gif

Then one morning, I woke up early by accident and as you do, I checked my phone first and the first email I saw was your request for this book was approved from Netgalley but because I request for so many books at one go I am not too sure which book was this and so I opened the email and saw THAT I WAS APPROVED FOR DUKE OF DESIRE! I postponed every other book I was reading for then no other book mattered except this and truth be told I finished it less than a day and it was….

This book was just SO GOOD! You know how I always bitch and complain when the heroine doesn’t have enough physical prowess or skills to make her an equal match to the hero but in this book those skills didn’t matter. The hero was such a scarred and broken character that he not only wanted Iris but actually NEEDED HER. Iris’s sweet temperament was able to soothe his scarred and ABUSED SOUL!!! Her calm and kind personality was able to help him overcome his abuse and make him able to live a happy and fulfilling life.

The abuse done to Raphael was bad guys. REAL BAD. When I read what he went through it hurt my heart. I was sick to my stomach and to make it worse I know such depravity still exists in the present day. It sickens me at how some humans act like beasts. Heck, I am quite confident that beasts are far better than these people who act or their darkest urges.

In this book, Iris’s other qualities need not be shown as it was showcased in the previous book Duke of Pleasure, where in that book you can see that Iris is really adept with solving puzzles and she is subsequently quite intelligent.

I feel like with this book Elizabeth was trying to show that female strength comes in many forms and one of it is strength of character against adversity even when said adversity comes in the form of your own husband. It takes a lot of mental and emotional strength to be there to support and help a survivor of abuse. Help them overcome their demons and it is harder still if it is someone you love.

Image result for slow applause gif

The plot was AMAZING as it handled a lot of sensitive topics and yes there were a few minor blips in the plot especially at the end where Raphael made Iris go back to his actual home (I can’t really remember the specifics) and thus leaving her vulnerable to being kidnapped and used as leverage. So, what he equipped her with the best of his warriors sometimes quantity trumps quality but that minor blip is okay. I can overlook this blip as there were so many other good qualities.

My review is going all over the place but the conclusion is this. THIS BOOK WAS BOMB! IT WAS SO GOOD! PLEASE READ IT!

Hated yet not forgotten

toptentuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and The Bookish and this weeks topic is a throwback freebie and I choose the topic “Hated Yet Not Forgotten” meaning I will talk about a few books I hated or thought sucked big time yet the idea/concept of the book never left my mind. Let’s get started!

There’s only two books I will list in this weeks Top Ten Tuesday and the first one is “Alchemist” by Peter James and the second is “From a Buick 8‘ by Stephen King.

Image result for alchemist peter james

Okay, because I didn’t post any of my thoughts on”Alchemist”, I gotta do a backstory for the book. I pretty much hated the book because at the back it says “one woman’s fight against the world’s most evil company”, don’t believe me? Here is the link but here’s the thing I read every page of that book and let me tell you it was not “one woman’s fight etc etc…” it was more like one man’s fight. Her boyfriend did all the hard work; the research, the espionage, the intelligence, the footwork yet she did nothing except freak out being Image result for sokka frustrated gifall damsel in distress and took God damned forever to convince there was a conspiracy going on. I seriously do not like it when the synopsis DOES NOT MATCH WITH THE PLOT! It was made worse because I ACTUALLY BOUGHT THE BOOK! I didn’t get it from Netgalley at all. Ugh.

But even after all the hate and the saltiness there was one thing regarding the book that my mind just would not let go and it has been 3 years. The book talks about a conspiracy done by a pharmaceutical company that does illegal human testing by inserting some form of DNA or virus in its pharmaceutical products and keeping track of whoever buys it very ala the Medici family of handling their servants. The whole give them poison and the cure but mess up the time tables so the servants won’t know if they have taken the poison or the antidote so they cannot leave the Medici’s if they value their lives enough.

This made me think about our current situation. We eat pills for everything these days from curing the common cold to curing cancer. We just trust our pharmacists, our doctors, nurses and the like because we believe they do not have the motivation nor the agenda to lie thus making me reflect that do we really even know what we are eating? Do we even understand the labels on all the pills because I definitely don’t. I am not saying that we all should be conspiracy kooks but think about it what if there really is a conspiracy to try out new drugs be it for good or bad and human testing was done to speed up the process. People with money do hold a lot of power and power over the masses is pretty alluring. This is just food for thought though because I am still pro-vaccines!

Image result for froma buick 8

Now, for From a Buick 8 by Stephen King I already did a review and from the review itself I already talked about the indecision of whether should I give the book a 2 or 5 rating and now its been a few years (is it? I’m not too sure) but anyways yeah it’s been awhile and my indecision has stayed the same.

On one hand the book bored the hell out of me. It was very repetitive and I kept on waiting and waiting for anything new and exciting to happen and still nothing did but then a thought occurred to me. What if this was Stephen King’s purpose? If I am not mistaken he wrote it in the first few chapters how anything no matter how spectacular and amazing occurs on a regular basis will eventually become the new normal and we the humans will be bored of it and thus need to find newer ‘amazing’ things. The book made me feel like I was one of the characters in the plot itself, how I too got bored of this so-called amazing alien car and waited and was disappointed when nothing happened. My brain drudged along to read all the pages of the book knowing it was all going to be a slow repetition of the last one just like the characters moved on with their daily lives and did not give a second thought to this mysterious car and when it did spurt an anomaly the characters just brushed it aside claiming it was ‘normal’ for the car to be that way.

I was both traumatized yet amazed at and with Stephen King’s writing. Traumatized because the book was so boring and dull yet amazed because even with disliking it and acknowledging I have read better books; Image result for sokka amazed gifThe idea of the plot, the writing, the conceptualization of it NEVER LEFT MY MIND! Does this mean that the book was good after all? I mean if you keep thinking about the book years after you read it then it must mean that the book at it’s core is a good book.

From a Buick 8 was my intro to Stephen King’s world and I want to read more yet am also afraid because let’s be honest his work isn’t clear cut. With his works there is no definitive clear answer. It’s a treasure trove for a theory nut! From Carrie, Misery, IT to The Shining. Good or bad his work, his idea rarely escapes the mind. This makes me really keen to take on his older books and my favorite book to movie adaptation from Stephen King’s works is Carrie and Misery. I just really liked how Carrie just got her powers. There was no explanation. She just got em and went crazy and with Misery, well I liked it because I was in full suspense on whether Paul will ever escape from that kook, Annie Wilkes.

The Bride Who Got Lucky… A Review

Title: The Bride Who Got Lucky (The Cavensham Heiresses, #2)

Author: Janna MacGregor

Published: 31 October 2017

Publisher: St. Martin’s Press

Source: Netgalley

Rating: 4/5

Goodreads Summary

He would do anything to protect her. Even marry her…

The son of a cold-hearted duke, Nicholas St. Mauer isn’t one to involve himself in society…or open his own heart to anyone. But driven by honor, the reclusive Earl of Somerton feels obliged to keep a watchful eye on Lady Emma Cavensham. She possesses a penchant for passions unbecoming a woman that finds Nick in constant peril of losing his well-structured solitude. She even dared kiss Nick once―an utterly unladylike, and delightful, lapse…

Emma can’t deny the appeal of the earl’s attention, and occasional affection, but she has no need for a man. There are worse fates than spinsterhood, as Emma knows too well. She still mourns the loss of her dear friend Lena, and is determined to prove Lena’s husband responsible for her death before he lures another innocent woman into a brutal marriage. But as Emma pursues her prey, a compromising moment upends all her plans. Now, with gossip swirling and her reputation in tatters, Nick may be the only man brave enough to join in Emma’s cause. . .and fight for her heart.

Review

When the publisher emailed me asking if I was interested in reading this book I jumped to it pronto because when will I never be interested in reading books that I didn’t have to request for… plus I already read the first book by Janna MacGregor so why not? Finally I am on top of a series in Netgalley might as well continue the winning streak BTW you can find my review for ‘The Bad Luck Bride’ here.

I was a bit sceptical going in on reading the book because I did not relate with main heroine, Emma, in the last book. I felt she that she was selfish Image result for sokka ugh gifand naive to think that her escapades will harm no one because it will Emma okay it will! And the scepticism I have over her characterisation went well into 1/3 of the book up until something happened that slapped some sort or realism into that brain of hers but at the same time I was thinking this I was also at war with myself. Her actions shows that a womans actions should not depend on anyone, that she should be her own woman; make her own mistakes, learn from them and damn all else. If a woman wants to get a damn book then damn well she should get the book!

The girl power belief in me made me warm up to Emma whereby I saw that she was smart, brave, kind and steadfast in her beliefs. When she encountered a problem that would not budge instead of giving up she just manoeuvred around the problem to solve it. Also, Emma used her wits and fiery disposition to spar with her adversaries instead of strength because let me be honest, the girl can’t fight to save her life.

Another aspect of this book that fired the girl power (okay fine ‘feminist’) belief in me was how in this book society looked down on women as the weaker specimen of man and worse, LESS INTELLIGENT! All because of the sex we were born with. Oh let me tell you, my blood pressure skyrocketed when I read that section. I wanted to slap Emma’s brother and say you stupid oaf! There are so many brilliant women in this whole wide world who helped shape the science that we know today with or without the help of men!

  • Marie Curie – Pioneer in radioactivity research
  • Hedy Lamarr – Inventor of wifi
  • Mileva Maric – co-author of Albert Einsteins work
  • Ada Lovelace – contributed in the workings of the first computer program

AND MANY MANY MORE!!!!! Oh God did that trigger me. What makes this man think that just because we are born women suddenly we are less intelligent. If we truly had mental problems or he addressed that we physically are less capable than men fine but to to put all that into one spectrum to say that because of so and so reasons women are supposed to babied then no buster!!! NO!! Triggered man, I AM SO TRIGGERED!

Image result for so triggered gif

Anyways on with the book review. I had serious respect for Emma when towards the end of the book she and Nick did not see eye to eye and she stuck to her guns which was morally correct by the way and was willing to walk away from the relationship as she could not live with a man who could not respect her views and I am at the back going all slow clap because doing that needs IRONCLAD WILLPOWER!!!

But all good things must come to an end. The awesomeness of Emma was slightly eclipsed by how oddly convenient a few plot points was done to propel the plot further to its ending. Suspiciously too convenient I might say and that unfortunately completely killed the seriousness of the feminism issue at hand.

The plot point was that Nick and Emma had a disagreement and he refused to listen to reason and MIRACULOUSLY!!!! His estranged father stopped by for a surprise visit and impromptu heart to heart talk where he revealed that because he lost his wife, he was too devastated by the loss that when Nick bailed that scum Paul from a gambling debt (yearsssss later just in case ya’ll be confused by the timeline) he just lost it and disowned Nick.

In my perspective….

Image result for that was a load of bullshit gif

I have never in my life heard about a father so distraught over losing his wife disowns HIS ONLY SON which he regrets immediately yet… YETTTTTTTT took him almost a full decade to try and mend the break and/or apologise???? What were you doing, Sir, during those mysterious decade?? Meditating with the Dalai Lama?

Also, another very convenient plot point was when Emma’s best friends brother, Jonathan (?), finally decided to avenge his sister (who died due to spousal abuse) by calling her sisters husband out for a duel.

Image result for finally gif

I get that that was (maybe) the only way Lena (the best friend) could ever get justice but the plot was rushed and all of them; Nicks father, the lawyer thing (Nick was being sued by Lena’s husband due to Emma snooping around for evidence for her murder) and the duel was all compacted all towards the end that the story could not breathe and I lost interest and empathy for any of the characters.

Overall, it was still an enjoyable book albeit me having problems with the ending.

Ezza’s Pizza Adventure at Chillax Cafe & Bistro

HELLOOOO BOOK BLOGOSPHERE! Today’s post is going to be a tad bit different (aside from me posting on a weekend that is), whereby it is a post of me reviewing my most favourite thing ever which is… FOOD!

giphy.gif

If you have read my last blog post you know I talked about being invited for an event by Sarawak Bloggers and the event was the PizzArt campaign by Anchor Food Professionals (AFP) hosted at Chillax Cafe’ & Bistro right here in my hometown, Miri, Sarawak.

Now you must be wondering what is this PizzaArt campaign about? Essentially, it is where the chosen restaurant partners for AFP create artsy pizza’s hence the name PizzArt (pizza + art… get it? hahahah). There are a total of five pizzas for this campaign which are the Pot Pie Pizza, Pizza Bomb, Mini Muffin Pizza, Adjaruli Khachapuri and Flower Pizzas (pictures correlate to the names in a clockwise fashion).

Chillax is the ONLY restaurant in Miri that was chosen by AFP for this campaign due to them having a kitchen crew (or chefs if you wanna get fancy) with advanced culinary skills as well as having pizza ovens. Not only that, AFP also provides training for the participating chefs and their assistants in the ways of a skilled pizzaiolo. This is to ensure that the pizzas provided are up to standard and lets be honest, tasty.

Out of the five pizzas shown above only three are available in Chillax and my review of them are as below:

Mini Muffin Pizza aka Lil Quacks (RM 12.90)

mini muffin pizza.jpg

This was the first pizza we tried and for the longest time I kept on wondering what was the meat that I was tasting but it turns out it to be smoked duck. I am not much of a duck meat eater hence the confusion at the taste and texture of the meat (at first) for me. The Lil’ Quack (it’s a really cute name to be honest) is great for busy people who are always on the go and needs a lunch that is filling yet not too heavy. Unfortunately, it is a bit too salty for my taste which I contribute to the smoked duck but overall still a delicious snack.

Pot Pie Pizza (Rm 17.90)

Okay the second pizza was by far my favourite one. The taste reminded me of my mom’s Shepherd Pie what with the beef meat used, the taste of the carrots, butter and most importantly THE CHEEEEESSSSEEEEEEEE!!!!!!

ALL HAIL THE GREAT CHEESE!

The crust for this pizza was simply delish! It was crunchy on the outside yet doughy on the inside. The other bloggers agree that this dish can be shared with two to three people which I too agree IF you’re not a gluttonous person like me. If you are then this dish is definitely just nice for a one person meal.

Adjaruli Khachapuri (RM 16.90)

Okay seeing the name I was surprised that it is not of Indian origin. It’s actually Georgian! Who knew? So, basically the dish is a centre-cheese-filled-bread with raw egg yolk. Now… Now I know what you guys are thinking. RAW EGG YOLK??! But not to worry the egg yolk will be cooked once its mixed with the lava hot cheese underneath it. The mixing of it is quite the experience, not that I would know, I was just the bystander whilst Eeca my friend mixed it with gusto! This dish will be the go to dish for Mozzarella cheese lovers because there is a whole chunk of it in the bread but it is a dish you have to eat whilst it is still hot before the cheese hardens. How to eat it you ask? You basically just rip the bread off WITH THE POWER OF A THOUSAND SUNS!!!!!! (okay maybe not to that extent) and dip it in the cheese centre and munch away.

The Adjaruli Khachapuri is NOT a dish for the gluttonous because you will get cheese overdose eating it due to the richness coming from the Mozzarella cheese, the butter and the egg. So consider yourself warned that this dish NEEDS TO BE SHARED!!!! This is more of a self reminder now that I think about it.

Here we see Ms. Ju Yi demonstrating the hunk-of cheese I told you about

The owner of Chillax, Mr. Karl, says the best drink that accompanies all the cheesy dishes is red wine whereby its tartness and sour taste cuts through the richness of the cheese so you don’t get a cheese overdose but this info didn’t come from me…or did it?.

Image result for wink gif

Whoa! Almost forgot to add that all the PizzArt pizzas in Chillax were made using the using only the finest ingredients such as Anchor Mozzarella Cheese, Anchor Butter, Anchor Culinary Creams and Anchor Cream Cheese.

Now, we got the talk of food outta the way let’s talk more about Anchor Food Professionals and what they are.

Anchor Food Professionals as quoted in their website is the Foodservice brand of Anchor whereby they now do more than just a simple selling of products. The services that they provide since their re-branding are being consultants where their teams are very hands on in ensuring that they work alongside their customers/partners in sharing new ideas that will be able to entice the public to be continuously interested in their products.

You can check out the link here, to know more information regarding other participating outlets for Anchor Food Professionals PizzArt Campaign. Mind you each outlets have different types of pizzas with different types of meats used so it is worth spending a few more minutes to see a participating outlet NEAR YOU!

Before I finally leave you I wanna thank AFP for inviting me and the rest of the Sarawak Bloggers for this event and I wish the campaign and AFP all the best of luck!

Ezza’s life updates

I have so been slacking off with my reviews lately and the cause is due to me running out of motivation to write book reviews. I currently am undergoing a sort of book-review-funk where I feel my reviews are not up to scratch and the books I read also suffer from the same problem.

Image result for ugh gif

I feel that historical romance just isn’t tickling my intellect enough for any form of discussion or debate to happen or maybe I am just not looking into the plot deep enough and so I decided to read Ancient Lights by John Banville and realized that I have no idea what is going on or what is the writer writing about which went on a tandem where I was thinking that maybe my own intellect wasn’t up to snuff… to put it simply… I am too stupid to comprehend any type of complex storytelling. I realized too late that the book is the last installment in a trilogy which explains why I have no idea what is going on… so this soothes my fear of me being too dumb.

Image result for im dumb gif

This feeling started when I became obsessed with video essays done by Nerdwriter1 on Youtube. I felt that he discussed his ideas with such conciseness, quality and good content that I felt dwarfed in comparison to my own works. His videos made me yearn for more. More quality content. More intellectual discussions that widens the mind.

Image result for jake crying adventure time sandwich gif

His videos encompassed movies, art, songs, poems, even the speech by Martin Luther King Jr.. It awed me how with meticulous research one can learn so much. There is so much knowledge out there in the world that it planted a seed of discontent with my own reading material.

Don’t get me wrong I love historical romance for its quality of escapism from the harsh reality of the world but too much form of mental escapism is also bad for I fear I am not learning much from reading these sorts of material and I truly can feel my brain turning to rot.

Image result for brain rotting gif

Which leads me to my second update in life. I was called for a second interview with Oceancare. First of all, I didn’t think I was even going to get a call back considering I was one amongst hundreds that came for the walk-in interview and I am grateful enough that I was given the opportunity and even if I did not get the job it is okay. It was such an adrenaline rush that the people at Oceancare thought that I was worthy enough to even get a second interview.

Image result for yes gif

The third life update was that a friend of mine introduced me to a Sarawakian Bloggers group which I honest to God did not even know existed till yesterday and through sheer luck (or is it fate?) I was invited to join a food testing event tomorrow at a restaurant and all I needed to do was give a review and write a blog post of the event and my experience. I was gobsmacked! Me? Invited for an event? My book blog and I? Wow… the most free thing my book blog and I had ever gotten was free books from Netgalley. This was a real step up for me and the best part I can meet new people. It’s scary because I am usually uncomfortable being at new places with new people but I feel at 24 I really should widen my social circle.

Image result for i must meet new friends gif

I really hope with joining this Sarawakian blog group/community I get to widen my social circle and finally MEET THE ONE!!!!!!!
