This weeks topic is “Books I Hated But Am Really Glad I Read It”

I really hate this book at how cheesy it is, how Bella is such a Mary Sue, how Bella isn’t emotionally strong, how she is so dependent on Edward. It aggravates me that he is her whole world that she is nothing without him, it pisses me off because I feel that a woman doesn’t need a man to have worth and thus why I am also glad that I read this book because it serves as a marker of my own maturity and a reflection of what I don’t want a woman to be which is helpless without a man. I mean honestly you don’t see Joan of Arc withering away because of her obsessive love over a man.

If I can survive reading all three of this dumpster fire, I can read anything

Book makes me question if pharmaceutical companies ever do illegal human testing. Still hated how it lies saying the hero is a woman.

Discovered a new bookish pet peeve due to said book

So, try to guess what is my favorite color based on the books I chose… I swear its easy…

I am assuming this “takes place in another country” to be outside my own country which honestly makes this post far easier because all books I read are outside my country of Malaysia.

This weeks topic is “Books That Surprised Me”

  • I expected this book to be a 3-4 rating for me like all her previous books I have read but surprisingly I really enjoyed this book. Who knew? Even gave it a 5 rating.

Review of Holiday in The Hamptons

  • I rarely read Malay books let alone manage to enjoy one but this book opened my eyes that not all Malay books are shit. I liked it so much I actually bought the second one almost at full price (I say almost because it was 20% off) and coming from a book cheapskate like me, that says A LOT.

  • You and I both know what I truly feel for this MONSTROSITY! Two years on and I am still riled up thinking about the plot. I can’t even, because if I do my rant will never end. The injustice I felt at having spent my hard earned cash for this trash is inconceivable.

Review of HP & The Cursed Child

  • I hated this book as well as I felt the synopsis was VERY misleading but for some unbeknownst reason I can’t seem to forget nor shake off the themes discussed in the book.

  • This book surprised me because I didn’t expect the book would be so tedious and torturous for me to read.

Books I Could Re-Read FOREVER

TTT-Big2 (1).png

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

And the introduction out of the way let’s get started! This weeks topic is BOOKS I CAN RE-READ FOREVER!!!!!!

Do I even need to do this list honestly? You guys know which books I can read forever. If you don’t then you must be new…

Harry Potter Series

Like Duh! I thought that now I am 25 my mind would have changed and I would find more problems with them or just generally find more flaws that the 7 year old me missed but I recently finished Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone and to be quite honest I enjoyed it more now as an adult as compared to when I was a kid because now I can appreciate how talented J.K. Rowling is (which is why I am a tad bit sad that her Cormoran Strike series didn’t captivate me as much as Harry Potter did) and how much time and creativity that was spent on building the characters, the plot, the world and their interactions. I had many moments where I laughed out loud reading HP and The Philosopher’s Stone and it has made me want to re-read the series all over again (Not Harry Potter and the cursed child though… that book will NEVER be canon in my eyes. OVER MY DEAD BODY WILL I CONSIDER THAT BOOK CANON… Even now I still can rant over the injustice that is that book. Ugh I can’t even… it will only get my blood pressure up). The book was just so good for me (I say book because you never know maybe the later installments I finally find flaws to critique).

Percy Jackson and the Olympians

I really enjoyed this series. I enjoyed it so much I spent over RM 300++ to buy the next series; The Kane Chronicles and The Heroes of Olympus series, of which I partially regretted because I had realized too late that I did not enjoy Rick’s new writing style and how his newer books lack any consequence and felt so juvenile-ish. With Percy Jackson, yes the books are for middle graders especially the first few but as you read you grow with the characters. The stakes get higher and characters die (not the main characters but you can win them all) so you feel like shit is going to hit the fan any moment. I would definitely re-read if my library stocked these books in order because I swear they don’t have them all and it infuriates me. Why get a book in a series if you’re not going to get the whole series. I don’t understand that logic.

Millenium series

I am not too sure why I even like re-reading this series. I just kind of do especially the third book (The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest). I haven’t read the newer ones from this other author and I probably won’t not that I didn’t try. I did. It just wasn’t as engaging anymore.

Sabriel, Lirael & Abhorsen

Yeah they’re from the Old Kingdom Series but I didn’t read Clariel and some other books from the series and have only read these three hahahha. I really like this series because as much as I hate Garth Nix and his huge time jump between books (excluding Lirael and Abhorsen) I quite enjoy reading about different heroines and their differing strengths and weaknesses and their character growth. It is intriguing to see how the environment of said heroines has a huge influence on their power and how they tackle obstacles in their way. Like Sabriel who has been trained to be an Abhorsen is calm, cool and collected and knows her shit whereas Lirael who was an unknowing Abhorsen but was raised as a Clayr is unsure, nervous at first but bloomed to be a resourceful and intelligent heroine. I have heard that Clariel was an Abhorsen who went rogue so yeah all of the heroines are interesting in their own way.

Funny how I don’t say historical romance as books I can re-read forever because I feel that historical romance isn’t the type of book you would call evergreen or timeless because I loved Judith McNaught books when I was younger but now re-reading it again I realized that the books were very problematic. Also, historical romance is the type of book that doesn’t have much nuance and it is like if you read one you have read them all.

And so yeah these are the only books that I can see myself re-reading it forever. I haven’t found any other books that I feel deserves to be on the forever list as of yet but I am still searching.

Books I’m Thankful For :)

I would like to dedicate this post to all the books that have left me SHOOK! THIS IS FOR YOU!!!!!! I LOVE ALL YA’LL!

Right, this is for the Top Ten Tuesday meme from The Broke and The Bookish so be sure to check them out. 😀

I was obsessed with his work when I was younger. First it was Goosebumps then it was the Fear Street installment and whilst I don’t read his works anymore his books hold a special place in my heart and also I am pretty sure it is his books that made me interested in the macabre.

Nancy Drew series

This series was the one that sowed in me my love for mysteries and detective work. It was because of Nancy that I am obsessed with mysteries be it serious homicide cases to something really silly like the theory for the lore of FNAF (Five Nights at Freddy’s). If you see my Youtube history 90% of it is just me listening to theory and mystery videos and the last 10% is for random stuff. I wanted to be Nancy Drew man, a lil asian version of Nancy what with her perfect life; intelligent, pretty, hot boyfriend, awesome best friends, huh… still wish I could have her life to be honest.

Come on man. This book was the shit for me. It allowed me to mingle with other kids at school because we were all reading the same books and best reason for me to be thankful for this book was because when I read it I really thought highly of myself and books I read and had I not thought this way of myself I would have never criticized what this girl read during a class and we wouldn’t have become the BESTEST OF FRIENDS! 11 years counting to forever man.

Ah. This book was the book my best friend, Nyn, was reading when I came to her all low key judgmental.

Fifty Shades of Grey series

Jesus Christ. I never imagined I would put this book into my books I am thankful for but let me explain before ya’ll think I am a hardcore fan. This book is my baseline for bad books. If I can survive reading this, I CAN SURVIVE READING ANYTHING! Also, the writing is so bad it unintentionally becomes a comedy.

Top Ten Books On My Monsoon – Durian Season TBR list

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and The Bookish and this weeks topic is “Top Ten Books On My Monsoon – Durian Season TBR list” okay not really it was originally “Top Ten books On My Fall TBR List” but I had to tweak it becausseeee of the reasons below 😀

Okay first of all I live in Miri, Sarawak which in turn is in Malaysia which is located in Southeast Asia and let me tell you about our 3 main seasons here:

Monsoon season

Image result for malaysia monsoon season

In Miri it is not as bad as West Malaysia (which is where the picture above is located, Johor to be exact) but just expect to be chillin indoors for awhile unless you don’t mind being blown away by the wind

Haze season

Image result for malaysia monsoon season

Haze season is the worst! Even in Miri. You can’t see shit, you can’t breathe. Not a pleasant season.

and most importantly

Image result for musang king durian

It’s Durian man. ENOUGH SAID!

So, now if I am not mistaken we are currently in transition between the monsoon season towards the Durian season but I might be wrong, weather has been pretty funky lately with Hurricane Harvey and Irma.

Anyhoots, let’s just moooovvvee on to the TBR list.

Okay, I have recently watched the revamped film adaptation of IT from Stephen King’s novel and….

Also helped that the actor playing the new Pennywise is pretty easy on the eyes.

Image result for bill skarsgård

Not so in his Pennywise get-up but still one can appreciate a good looking Swedish man especially one who has been single since the dawn of time.

Image result for new pennywise the clown

So, anyways I watched it and now I am in my Stephen King phase. I have overcome my trauma of reading From a Buick 8 and am now ready to tackle on his other works! Such as…

  • IT (DUH! I loved the movie so obviously you gotta go back and appreciate the source material)

  • Misery (I watched the movie adaptation for this one too and LOVED IT! The suspense the feel, THE TERROR!!!!!)

  • Thinner (Not much reason aside from I already own it and might as well read it)

Now, I didn’t put Carrie or The Dark Towers series in because, one, I feel that Carrie already has so much exposure and I know what you’re gonna say. IT has a lot of exposure too, I agree with that, BUT IT is a mammoth of a book with its pages clocking in at MINIMUM 1100 pages whereas Carrie is only roughly 200-ish pages and for The Dark Towers series, well it’s a series and I am not good in keeping up with a series especially if they ain’t free and publicly available at the library.

So far these are books I am planning to read before the end of the year is up. It might take me awhile what with saving my money and buying them and whatnot. Before I log off this post, tell me which Stephen King book are you interested in reading and most importantly DID YOU WATCH THE MOVIE IT??? DID YOU LIKE IT????

Best Books I’ve Read in 2017 So Far

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and The Bookish and this weeks topic is “Best Books I’ve Read in 2017 So Far”. Let’s get started!

Holiday in the Hamptons

I like Sarah Morgan’s books but rarely do I give her books a 5 (Okay so what I only read 3 of her books including this one wasn’t my fault I was late to the party) but this book just ticked all the boxes in my checklist and I enjoyed it immensely and hey improvement as the previous book I only gave a 3.

The Viscount Who Loved Me

I loved this book because it was just so funny! I couldn’t stop laughing reading the antics of the two lead characters with each other. It was just so absurd at how they are with each other.

Because of Miss Bridgerton

While this book isn’t as funny as the book above it still had its comedic moments and a lot of historical romance are too serious that funny historical romance books is a welcome reprieve.

finding kate

Finding Kate

You can find my review here. I liked how the book changed my mind and consequently altered my perception of what was truly happening versus what I saw was happening.

evidence of love

Evidence of Love

Here’s my review for the book and this book was just full of gore and injustice and lots of other things mixed into one that I just simply devoured it.

The Radium Girls

Review for the book is here. This book is just feels manifested into words then put on paper. It was very informative whilst at the same time able to tear my soul apart with its heartbreaking story.

Something Wonderful

This book I gave a 5 both because I truly enjoyed it and also because it had sentimental values. I read it ages so and re-reading it brought back fond memories of what happened in my life at the time.

Top Ten Tuesday: Ten Things On My Reading Wishlist

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and The Bookish and this weeks topic is  “Top Ten Things On My Reading Wishlist” where it essentially is things you want to see more in books. Let’s get started!

  • Historical romance not set in England or during the regency (era?)
    • As much as I love HR, it would be refreshing to read about different cultures, different ethnicity and how their love lives are put in the perspective of historical romance
  • A book about best friends
    • I just want a book which has a good strong friendship as its core story and I don’t want it to be YA. I want to relate to it being a 24 year old with a best friend I have known for almost 11 years. More of a flashback of said friendship and the friends just reminisce about shit they did together.Image result for best friends gif
  • A compilation of unsolved murders or serial killings or just murders occurring in Malaysia
    • Just because… no particular reason for it.
  • The female lead needs no man
    • I want a female lead who isn’t constantly agonizing over which guy to choose (I don’t get that privilege so neither do I want them to have said privilege) and if she did have a love interest I want them to break up and she can be free to be her own woman.Image result for strong women gif
  • Less… WAYYYYY LESSSSSS love triangle/instalove/drama in YA
    • Maybe I am reading the wrong YA but mostly I hate love triangles like, where in the name of Jesus did you manage to find not one BUT TWO GUYS to like you at the same time???????? And what is with the instalove? Instalust I get and also the drama that unfolds in YA sometimes I find it so stupid and I just can’t relate (maybe this is what they call adulting?).Image result for that is so stupid gif
  • An against the norm female lead
    • I want a female lead who is an underdog and who DOESN’T have special powers or is superbly excellent in sword fighting or bad-ass-kickery where she doesn’t train for months and is still super fantastic at killing people. Can’t it just be she is super shitty at things and eventually she gets better, not excellent, just better and over time due to persistence and hard work and just sheer tenacity and force of will she wins and defeats her enemies. I want her to fail more than she wins but is still able to stand up and be all yes I am tired but I will not give up ala Rocky Balboa!Image result for rocky balboa gif
    • Maybe have a female lead that gives no fucks about body hair? Still wear sleeveless shirts or dresses even though her pits are now a nice furry meadow or maybe a lead that wears the hijab and abides by the islamic rules of conduct and is still bad ass? Or a woman/girl who is unashamed for her love for 90’s Bollywood movies and uses her power of Bollywood dancing to save the world?
  • Female villains
    • YES! More FEMALE VILLAINS who are just cray! They’re not doing evil things because of a traumatic past or whatever. They do it because they want to and its fun for them and they relish in inflicting pain on other people. If men can be awesome villains can’t a female too? I just want them to unabashedly bitchy, evil, sarcastic, unapologetic, the whole nine yards!Image result for evil laugh gif
  • A romance book where the romance doesn’t pan out but they stay good friends after a good mourning period.
    • Sometimes a relationship just doesn’t work and you just fall out of love with somebody, doesn’t mean you stop caring about them. Loving someone and being IN love with someone are two different things. Plus, a healthy perspective on a break up never hurt anybody.
  • More realistic books on bookish people.
    • Realistic here is when said bookworm meets another bookworm and they have the same reading taste and they just COMPLETELY FLIP OUT!

Image result for bookworms flipping out gif

  • A fiction book about the pains of changing your lifestyle to be healthier
    • I want a book that is similar to what I am experiencing now. The constant soreness from exercising, the guilt of eating junk food, the want to have a hot body but not really wanting to work for it.

Image result for i want a hot body but don't wanna work out gif
