Goodreads summary

Every year for a decade, five college friends spent a weekend together at the atmospheric Chateau du Cygne Noir. Then, tragedy struck.

Ten years later, Laurel Muir returns to the castle for the first time since the accident, hoping to reconnect with her friends and lay the past to rest. When a murderer strikes, it rips open old wounds and forces the women to admit there’s a killer in their midst. The remaining friends make a pact to unearth the truth, but suspicion, doubt, and old secrets threaten to tear them apart. Unsure who to trust, Laurel puts herself in harm’s way, risking it all for friendship and long-delayed justice.

Review

I was getting a tad bit tired of reading historical romance as it lead me to truly believe that I will soon be swept off my feet by a 6’2 half naked gorgeous species of man with baby blue eyes and golden brown curly hair which in my sad depressing reality WILL NEVER HAPPEN.

Yes… Yes I am yours Tom ❤ !!!!!!!

So, I went on my way and read ‘The Last Weekend’ by Laura DiSilverio annnndddd I was left feeling disappointed, unsatisfied and confused.

Why you might ask? Let me explain away…

The first obstacle that stood in my way to fully enjoying the book was the fake friendship all of the women (Laurel, Dawn, Geneva and Ellie) had with Eva. At first, when the friendship started out it was honest enough but as time went on it is very obvious that the bond of friendship had slowly deteriorated away. This deterioration was mainly caused by Eva being a class A bitch whereby she poisoned, manipulated and sabotaged her own best friends whereby each action done upon them made Eva have some sort of power over them. This is like Littlefinger and Varys level of manipulation.

Eva manipulating her friends is one thing but the fact that these ‘friends’ knew how she really was and still remained friends was the true obstacle that made me stop in my tracks. I am a person who values my friendships hence why I don’t have an assortment of friends so for me when somebody betrays me they are completely cut off from my life and essentially to me you do not exist in my realm of existence thus I truly cannot comprehend why these smart women allowed themselves to still be friends with a viper of a woman that is Eva.

There was no redeeming quality for Eva that made me try to understand why the women are still friends with her. This is not Game of Thrones nobody will get their head chopped off if they break off their friendships so why indeed are they still friends?

Had the situation of each woman been like Laurels situation where she was essentially blackmailed to be still be friends then I can somewhat empathize and understand but for the others I see no reason why after what Eva did to them individually that they still continue with this charade.

Another obstacle that was stacked against me was the unfortunate circumstance that was the formatting of my ebook in my Kindle. The formatting confused me somewhat as I can never tell which POV am I reading which also lends to the fact that I felt that all the POV’s are so similar I can never differentiate them and thus this point leads the way to the last obstacle that made it very hard to truly enjoy this book which was the writing.

The writing wasn’t at all bad by all means but neither did it make me interested in the plot nor the characters. The writing and writing style fell flat for me and the only reason why I finished the book was because as a plot driven reader I wanted to know what happened.

At the end of the day when I finished the book I was left unsatisfied as I truly could care less about the characters and in my mind somebody should have shoved Eva off a building years ago and maybe throw a brick on her head after that for good measure.

WWW Wednesdays is a weekly meme hosted by Taking on a World of Words and you just answer three simple questions and BA-DA-BOOM! You are done.

So the three WWW’s are:

  • What are you currently reading
  • What did you recently finish
  • What do you think you’ll read next

Currently reading:

No books man… currently reading nothing… I have been busy doing my crochet and attempting to sell my amigurumi combined with making my DIY calling cards and watching Game of Thrones (I am just in season 1 and it’s killing me to watch it because I like Ned so much not because he was such a good character but because he was such a good and decent man; he was a good father and surrogate father, good husband, good friend, honest, fair, kind AND HE DIED BECAUSE HE WAS A DECENT MAN WHY WHY WHY??? GOD DAMN YOU SNAKE CERSEI AND PYSCHO JOFFREY!)

Recently finished:

Sweet Lord above when I received an email saying that I was approved for Duke of Desire by Elizabeth Hoyt, I legit shot out of bed at 5 am, downloaded it and finished it in the same day and holy fuzzballs THE BOOK BLEW MY MIND AWAY! BLEW IT AWAY!!! I almost cried because I didn’t want the series to end and also because I didn’t read the others but hell, will I buy it soon!!! I had waited months to read this book and more because I had to wait to be approved and when I did I was all ‘STOP READING ALL OTHER BOOKS! STOP! STOP! STOP!’. I was reading The Last Weeekend by Laura Disilverio at the time by the way.

The Last Weekend was okay for me. Really could not understand the plot but will discuss more in my review.

Also, finished The Duke and The Scot Beds His Wife by Kerrigan Byrne and I highly enjoyed both of em although I enjoyed The Scot Beds His Wife more because it had more funny moments.

The Right Kind of Rogue by Valerie Bowman was a huge disappointment for me. Rated it a 3 but I will explain in my review whenever it is posted as to why it was a huge disappointment yet I still rated it pretty high.

Jesus, I didn’t realize I had read a lot of historical romance this month. Should spice things up with a dash of thriller or something.

Reading next:

I am just putting this here because it’s customary but we all know I have no list of what to read next. I just go with the flow and the flowing is steering me to more historical romance but we shall see won’t we.
