Review

I have been busy with work and chatting up this guy from work although on this front it seems more like I am cornering myself into the dreaded friendzone which is such a shame because I would like to do the Devil’s tango with him if you get my drift so anyways back to the point, the point is that I just have been living life too much to be bothered to even read anything but when I received an email from a publisher asking me if I was interested in reading the next book from Kerrigan Byrne I was like…

“BITCH! You ain’t even gonna ask! It’s always YES to Kerrigan!”

Because girl, the last two books I read by her was just so bomb! I waited months to get the next book so as you can see my expectations are pretty high… pretttyyyy high so when I read it I was just so so confused by how disappointed I was.

The writing for this book felt so sub-par for me and the plot itself was flimsy AT BEST. Don’t even get me started on the atrocious dialogue present in this book. It

The first half of the book was great and I enjoyed the puppy love between Lorelai and Ash as it was so cute and innocent but towards the latter end of the book, the plot was borderline on non-existent and the dialogue/conversation happening between the two main characters were so repetitive and had no meaning nor resolution in sight.

Also, there were a lot of plot points in the book that in my opinion was written purely just for plot progression because honestly said plot point had no bearing whatsoever on the overall plot of the book one wonders why did the author even include it in the first place? One example for this is when Lorelai for some God damned reason fainted in a make out sesh with Ash and miraculously she never fainted again after that even though it was said that she does this FREQUENTLY as a way her body handles stress.

Another thing that annoyed me was how the author doesn’t show what happened to any of the characters and instead just tells us what happened as if that will satisfy our curiosity. By doing so, the author strips the readers empathy for the characters because I swear to God I could not give a shit about the characters whatsoever. I mean I can’t relate to Lorelai and her being a victim of abuse neither can I understand why Ash is so God damned pissed all the God damned time. Like bro, take a chill pill man. Jesus.

I think I was highly disappointed by the book because I waited months for it. MONTHS! Her other books were that good that I waited MONTHS! Will I continue to support the author, yeah definitely one disappointing book might just be a fluke because she is definitely talented.

Review

Hello hello! Long time no read! Now this review was supposed to be up last month and for a blog tour but due to family matters and the absence of free time to work on it I will only post it now since I just finished writing it 10 minutes ago.

Now the booked hooked me in real slow because I just can’t imagine Samantha Masters being a historical romance heroine you know? She wasn’t exactly pretty and she is just a HUGE ball of spitfire and the sass contained in that petite body of hers can almost put Queen Bey to shame, I say almost because come on she is Beyonce, ain’t nobody can tear the Queen down from her throne!

Another thing I liked about Sam was that she was very trigger happy and when I mean very I do mean ‘VERY’ and because of that you can’t help but like her. It is not everyday you find a heroine willing to shoot just an inch off the hero’s face and she practically wants to shoot Gavin (the hero) every time he comes over to try and woo her. This ties in to its comedic timing because here is Sam DETERMINED not to be wooed over by a man who is practically sex-on-legs and there is Gavin also equally determined to seduce her. The woman is shooting at him left right and center and still he won’t give up so I don’t blame her for falling for him, she gave her absolute best in trying to shoo him away.

Before you guys think this book is all rape-y, it’s not. They fall for each other for reals and there was no rape-ish scenes happening so nothing to worry about on that front. They got together at first due to pragmatism and this reminds me of one instance in the book that just made me laugh. Sam wants to contend with Gavin over ownership of her land and to do that she must go to the local magistrate and after a whole tirade at Gavin on how she will file a report of his vocal abuse  to the magistrate, imagine her surprise when she finds out that the magistrate is none other than Gavin himself (okay if it isn’t the magistrate do forgive me the details get fuzzy after awhile so I don’t remember it).

As for all books I always root for the characters happiness because duh but for this book I REALLY ROOTED FOR SAMS HAPPINESS! The woman needs to catch a break which is also another reason why I really liked Sam. Gavin wasn’t the first man she loved and with him she found true happiness albeit through a very rocky start upon even rockier foundations but whatever main point is that she found stability and love that she sought in this sex-on-legs man. The plot of the book just allows you to really empathize with Sam who in all honesty was just swept off her feet in a thing called life and her pain over her first love was so real I really felt for her.

The book also has great subplots with its side characters what with Eammon (Callum’s father) and Eleanor (Gavin’s mother), Callum and the two dudes whose names I forgot. I am especially excited for Callum’s story because I am pretty sure the next book will be his and his subplot in this book is enticing enough without giving much away that I am just dying to get my hands on the next one.

I hope the publishers approve me though even though I did miss the book tour, I mean come on! I had to help my sister in law post breast cancer surgery so obviously my book blog which I do for fun will take a back seat indefinitely. I hope they understand.

In retrospect, I am quite positive I loved this book because of Sam. Her will to survive and be independent, her resourcefulness, her wit, her sass and also her vulnerability, it just shows how a real woman can be multi faceted and yeah Gavin is okay I guess but pssshhh he ain’t the only sex-on-legs I have read about.

On a complete off tangent side note, I didn’t know there was a Netgalley for the UK and the commonwealth nations (?) ????? Like whuttt???

WWW Wednesdays

WWW Wednesdays is a weekly meme hosted by Taking on a World of Words and you just answer three simple questions and BA-DA-BOOM! You are done.

So the three WWW’s are:

  • What are you currently reading
  • What did you recently finish
  • What do you think you’ll read next

Currently reading:

No books man… currently reading nothing… I have been busy doing my crochet and attempting to sell my amigurumi combined with making my DIY calling cards and watching Game of Thrones (I am just in season 1 and it’s killing me to watch it because I like Ned so much not because he was such a good character but because he was such a good and decent man; he was a good father and surrogate father, good husband, good friend, honest, fair, kind AND HE DIED BECAUSE HE WAS A DECENT MAN WHY WHY WHY??? GOD DAMN YOU SNAKE CERSEI AND PYSCHO JOFFREY!)

Recently finished:

Sweet Lord above when I received an email saying that I was approved for Duke of Desire by Elizabeth Hoyt, I legit shot out of bed at 5 am, downloaded it and finished it in the same day and holy fuzzballs THE BOOK BLEW MY MIND AWAY! BLEW IT AWAY!!! I almost cried because I didn’t want the series to end and also because I didn’t read the others but hell, will I buy it soon!!! I had waited months to read this book and more because I had to wait to be approved and when I did I was all ‘STOP READING ALL OTHER BOOKS! STOP! STOP! STOP!’. I was reading The Last Weeekend by Laura Disilverio at the time by the way.

The Last Weekend was okay for me. Really could not understand the plot but will discuss more in my review.

Also, finished The Duke and The Scot Beds His Wife by Kerrigan Byrne and I highly enjoyed both of em although I enjoyed The Scot Beds His Wife more because it had more funny moments.

The Right Kind of Rogue by Valerie Bowman was a huge disappointment for me. Rated it a 3 but I will explain in my review whenever it is posted as to why it was a huge disappointment yet I still rated it pretty high.

Jesus, I didn’t realize I had read a lot of historical romance this month. Should spice things up with a dash of thriller or something.

Reading next:

I am just putting this here because it’s customary but we all know I have no list of what to read next. I just go with the flow and the flowing is steering me to more historical romance but we shall see won’t we.
