QUESTIONS

What is your average monthly budget for books?

To be honest I don’t have a monthly or even an annual budget for books and this can be disastrous in two ways. One is where I go absolutely bananas at book sales such as Big Bad Wolf Sale and just buy EVERYTHING I want to my hearts content then suffer the consequence for the next few months or I but no books at all and just borrow stuff from the library or at worst read ebooks I requested and was approved on from Netgalley.

What’s the most you’ve ever spent in a bookstore?

On my own money its about RM 200-ish. On my Mom’s money when I was a teen, its RM 500-ish.

Are you willing to pay full price for a brand new release, or will you wait until you have a coupon or there’s a sale?

This highly depends on two things.

  1. How much do I want to read that book
  2. My current budget and whether I am willing to forgo food for the month

The second reason is painful because books in Malaysia is crazy expensive especially if they’re not locally written books. Like I am not spending RM 50 on a 300 page book when I know for a fact I will finish that book in a day.

But most of the time I don’t really want to read books so much that I am willing to spend money on them anymore especially if they are a series. I just can’t imagine spending my hard earned money that way knowing I can just make myself read ebooks. I am not a huge ebook person but hey free books are free books and when you’re strapped for cash you will read anything you can have for free.

Although I must say if I REALLY want to read that book I will buy it. It’s just that recently books I have waited on to read and paid for with my wage which was earned through blood sweat and tears and then the book is a read I did not enjoy. You can say a part of me was traumatized and has since refused to buy new books unless I am ABSOLUTELY sure I will like it.

I am looking at you Cursed Child and fourth installment of Robert Gailbraith’s book of which I forgot its title

Would you rather buy one new book or several less expensive used copies?

This one is easy! SEVERAL LESS EXPENSIVE USED COPIES DUHHHHHH!

My shelf now are primarily made up of books I buy in used book sales unless I buy them at Big Bad Wolf book sales then yeah those are new but most of the time I just squirrel my way to the used books section and hopefully find one book I enjoy. The Asian in me is like why would I buy one book that cost RM 30 when I could buy 5 books for the same price??

What do you think is a reasonable price for a new hardback book? A paperback? An eBook?

Hmmm… difficult…

Hardback: RM 60 – RM 120

Paperback: RM 35 – RM 50

Ebook: RM 20 max

Hardback and paperback the prices I think should reflect on how thick they are and how beautiful the book cover is.

Is a signed book worth more to you? How about a first edition?

To be honest no. I don’t care. Unless I get to meet my fav historical romance authors in real life then DAMN STRAIGHT I’ll care but if not. Nah, I am pretty ambivalent over it.

What is your most valuable book (sentimental or actual value)?

My books are all only sentimental in value but my most valuable books are my Harry Potter series and also books gifted to me by friends or family members.

Will you pay more for a cover or edition you like better?

Definitely pay more for an edition I like better. I am already paying for this shit I might as well go all out and get the ones I like.

What physical characteristics does a good quality book have?

You know a book is from a good publishing company when everything just looks smooth. Like everything flows you know? From the fonts of the title that matches the color of the cover page. The coverpage art suits the genre of the book. I have no idea how to explain what is in my mind but basically you don’t get wonky fonts or models posing for the coverpage looking as still as a plywood board. Ya feel?

If you won the lottery, what bookish things would you do with the money?

I would buy books that I want basically. Its not exciting but I haven’t bought books that I wanted in a long time.

This is how I want my reading space to be. With a huge ass window that can open wide, which obviously have safety stuff installed so I wont fall out of it but yeah basically.

Day 14: Book Rant Reviews

Do you ever get into a funk in your reading life that whatever books you read it is just meh…

You don’t hate the book with a burning passion and neither do you love the book with the intensity of a thousand suns… The book is just meh…

This is where I am at with my reading/bookish life. No matter what book I read. No matter what genre. They lack the X-factor that can tap into the emotions deep DEEP within my heart and unleash the FEELS contained within.

Hence, why I currently am BINGING on book rant reviews on BookTube! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THESE RANT REVIEWS! Especially if they are articulate and are able to point out why they dislike the book and not meander around.

Mind you, it’s not the length that bothers me. I have listened to a book rant review that was over an hour and a half long and I did not mind it at all but the video must have its points you know.

So, I will share with you my fav BookTubers that I love listening to for a good dose of book rant reviews.

  1. Theresa (ivymuse)

I love her reviews because they’re so in depth the feels she portrays in her reviews. I live for it! She explains in detail why she doesn’t like the book and her thoughts about it and is it weird I like listening to her accent?

2. The Authentic Observer

She doesn’t do a lot of rant reviews to be honest but I till today still highly enjoy listening to her analysis of The Shadowhunter books and damn does she go deep into the topic

3. Kat (Paperbackdreams)

Kat’s rant reviews have so much feels! They are articulate and most of all they are funny as fuck! I rewatch her rant reviews on Fifty Shades of Grey all the time to get a bit of a chuckle on a downer day.

4. Caleb Joseph

Caleb doesn’t do a lot of rant reviews but whatever book reviews he does actually do I will watch immediately because I just know it’s going to be hilarious!

5. Cindy (Readwithcindy)

Another funny BookTuber… I highly suggest you guys watch her Court of Mist & Fury review. I legit snorted the tea I was drinking up my nose when I listened to it. Sarcasm on point!

6. Jordan Harvey

Jordans review I really like because its in depth (I have lost my vocabulary apparently… because I can’t think of any words to replace in depth and am too fucking lazy to look it up), its concise and its fun to listen to. Plus her voice is really soothing.

I am sure there are other BookTubers that I watch whose rant reviews I highly enjoy but I can’t remember their names.

Tell me which BookTubers do you watch to get them book feels?

Review

It’s no wonder that my reading slump is just getting prolonged. I have been reading sub-par books after sub-par books that just slowly eat away at my enthusiasm and passion for reading as this year comes to an end.

As you guessed it, this book is also a sub-par book for me. The premise seemed interesting but what hooked me in was the cover, it’s so in your face and just reels your attention it that I decided to give this book a go and soon after regretted it.

The first problem for me was that the book had far too many POV’s. Far too many. You have ‘The Witness’ (Ella Longfield), ‘The Friend’ (Sarah bestfriend of Anna Ballard), ‘The Father’ (Anna’s dad), ‘The Private Investigator’ and ‘The Watcher’ (I can’t really remember the title given in the book) and because there were so many perspectives that you don’t have enough time to connect with them all which disables my feelings to empathize with what they’re going through making me not caring as to what is happening in their lives.

Also, it is annoying how there are a lot of POV’s yet they are almost indistinguishable from each other. They are all slow and dreary and utterly boring and what’s worse, repetitive. Each chapter always has a cliffhanger of what a character is hiding and it is repeated again and again and again yet the author prolongs the reveal that by the time it is actually revealed you are far too annoyed to even care.

Another point that annoyed me about this book is the pacing and the reveal of the antagonist. The pacing of this book is so slow which I am assuming supposed to be a slow burn or something yet towards the end suddenly the pacing went from a 2 to a 10 immediately that the reveal of the antagonist feels extremely rushed and not explained properly. What their motives were, why they had done so and so.

Plus, the reveal of the antagonist came completely out of nowhere that it is just mind boggling and leaves you confused as to how did the author even get this antagonist anyway? There were no clues, no nothing and suddenly I am expected to believe that this is the true antagonist and the reason for their motive was obsession? Where tell me where did it show?

Long story short this book was a dud and I am disappointed.

Review

This book was yet another disappointment delivered in the Historical Romance genre to me. I am genuinely surprised that this genre gave me two disappointments in quick succession. This has never happened before.

Right, the reason this book is a disappointment because it started out really strong. Guns blazing right out the window and yet the more I read the more the plot just unraveled itself and at last I was left with a steaming pile of poop.

Cheesiness aside (because its Valerie Bowman, I know her writing and plot will be cheesy eventually, it’s becoming her signature move) the one thing that annoyed me about the characters and the plot of this book was how idiotic and illogical everything was.

First of all, no spy on Earth will continuously announce themselves to be spies every bloody second (IT BEATS THE DAMN PURPOSE OF BEING A SPY IF YOU ALWAYS ANNOUNCE YOURSELVES TO BE SPIES NO????).

*The meaning of spy literally says to get information from the enemy discreetly…. DISCREETLY!*

Like all right, I understand you are a family of spies I do not need to be reminded of it every single fucking second alright? I have read the previous books. Let’s just get on with the damn plot already. It is so annoying. Oh we are spies this, we are spies that, there is no need to hide behind the door because we know you are there because we are what?.. oh yeah we are spies. Jesus Christ I tell you. I FUCKING BLOODY GET YOU ALL ARE BLOODY SPIES. LET IT GO.

Image result for tywin saying a king is no king if they have no announce it

Same shit except it’s spies in this case.

Don’t get me started on the plot itself. It is so idiotic. So, you’re telling me this Lady (daughter of whoever) who is in love with this Duke who is to be engaged to Regina is behind all of it? All the assassination attempts in the hopes that maybe… MAYBE he will fall in love with her instead. WHAT THE FUCK and mind you all of this is only revealed right at the end of the plot with no exposition and no explanations on how the hell did this even happen. That has to be the flimsiest reason for an assassination attempt I have ever heard in my life. This girls plan is so convoluted and stupid it’s hilarious and bloody comical.

The thing that annoyed me the most was how convenient it was for Regina to finally marry Daffin towards the end when the whole GOD DAMNED FORSAKEN BOOK was about her just absolutely in mental and emotional torture because he isn’t a blue blood like her and they can’t marry due to their status. Like, she says her uncle is the barrier between her and Daffin for a happily ever after and that he is hard headed that he would never agree for a union between them to ever happen but at the end all that needed to be done was have a few family members sit him down and say that Daffin truly makes Regina happy and he is all for it.

Do you know how annoying it is when you root for a couple to be together to overcome this (what seems to be a huge ass) obstacle only to realize they made a mountain out of a bloody fucking mole hill.

Image result for flips table gif

Yeah… It is very annoying.

And it really is disappointing because the book started out really good, writing was great, pacing was great, everything was great, I thought it had nicely timed humor as well but I have no idea why after it passed the halfway mark everything just went to hell.

Review: Lethal White by Robert Gailbraith (Part 2)

This is a rant review.

It will be long.

It will be full of spoilers.

It will be filled to the brim with my feelings of angst and anger….

Read at your own risk… If you get butt-hurt by this rant honestly I did warn you…

I was so mother-friggin excited when this book came out okay bitches. I read all the other three books, I bought them too so when I knew Lethal White was out I was off the charts excited. OFF THE DAMN CHARTS YA FEEL?!

So, I got the book and I start reading thinking that maybe just maybe Robin will get her head out of her ass and divorce that son of a bitch Matthew. I mean fucks sake she got attacked, she even took a break from him man and what do I read in this book? I read that not only did she say yes to the bastard but she actually stayed married to him! WTF?!!!

This is not the worst part alright. The reason why I complained on the length of the book in part 1 of my review is because I had to sit down and just read to Robin complain incessantly… and I MEAN INCESSANTLY ABOUT HER GOD DAMNED MARRIAGE TO MATTHEW. FUCKS SAKE WOMAN. YOU’RE THE ONE WHO WANTED TO FUCKING STAY AND SO CALL “MAKE IT FUCKING WORK”.

It is bad enough I have to read to dull, boring, mind numbing complaints of Robin about her marriage I then had to read about Strike complain about his feelings towards Robin and her marriage to Matthew too!!!!! I want to read about murder, about mystery, about detective-ism. Not some complaining crap that goes on well for three fucking chapters of the damn book. Like if it was slotted in the plot here and there, it’s fine, whatever you know but this is not here and there and I am supposed to believe that Robin is intelligent when she absolutely refuses to see that Matthew is an ill fit for her not only as a husband but also a companion?

Like, she doesn’t even need to have a romantic partner you know. Why can’t the plot involving Robin be that she gets divorced and has to navigate the single life WITHOUT any romantic entanglements from Strike. Eventually yes maybe they can be together or maybe not. Like I said in Part 1, can’t their relationship be love but not being in love like Sherlock and Watson from Elementary. Must they pine for each other. WHY???! Why can’t men and women just be friends without romantic feelings be involved? I just don’t fucking get it.

And the whole reason Robin didn’t leave Matthew because they both thought he was on death’s door and she was guilt-tripped to say, I say that’s a load of bullshit! UGH! I was really rooting for Robin too man, I wanted her to grow… and mature… and something. I mean she only realizes and takes action against Matthew when she finds out he cheated on her. Like OMG. Can you not. It just makes her whole supposed growth towards independence feel so shallow and lackluster.  It undercuts her making the decision to leave him her own decision ya know. Instead the decision was made for her because how could she stay anymore with Matthew.

And the whole sexual tension between Strike and Robin just stresses me out. It feels so childish. You were the one who didn’t want to pursue anything with Strike Robin, so don’t blame the man if he wanted to have a fling or have sex with whomever he wants. You have no right to be jealous nor treat him unfairly because you’re a married woman and he is a single man. So fuck off Robin. Just fuck off.

Oh god the plot. The plot in this book was so fucking bloody weak. I am supposed to care about the insane stories from a schizophrenic guy all because Strike says his story is too detailed to not be true. Fuck no J. K. Rowling. If I have to read all 590 pages of this book I need a stronger plot than what you just gave me which was so full of fillers, I can’t even come close to imagine you’re the same writer for Harry Potter.

I don’t know what she was trying to achieve with the plot, first it was weak and second there were so many diversions to sub-plots that not only didn’t pan out but they were boring. I was bored reading this book and the ending and the reveal at the end was so what the fuck you’re just like how the hell did it even happen?

I liked the first book a lot because I felt like I too was putting the clues and puzzles together to solve the problem/mystery. It was fun. It made me as a reader feel involved but this book was so confusing, half the clues weren’t even shown to us and suddenly I am made to believe that the killer to that minister is his son Rafael who had daddy issues. I mean the ending could’ve been better had the fillers or sub-plots focused more on the why Rafael killed his father. Like I get his dad wasn’t kind to him and shit but I feel disconnected to his character. Had the author wrote more about Rafael’s backstory, shown him as an empathetic character that due to his upbringing did what he did he could’ve been a great villain but nooooooo I had to read pages upon fucking pages of Robin and Strike pining over each other. God just claw my eyes out already.

This book felt so tedious and boring to read. I can’t bring myself to be excited to read the next installment because I was ambivalent on the third book and now the fourth is a complete disaster for me. So yeah.

Sorry this post took forever, I was busy and sorry if my ramblings are all over the place. My emotions are all over the place too.

The book was okay for me. It wasn’t bad but neither was it mind-blowingly good. Most of the stories were mediocre for me, I didn’t feel scared nor horrified instead I felt confused by reading some of them and occasionally bored. It could be that I am just not a short story person but overall the book and its stories did not leave a lasting impact on my mind.

Sorry my review for this book is so short. There’s only so much I can say for a book I feel lukewarm about.

I really hate this book at how cheesy it is, how Bella is such a Mary Sue, how Bella isn’t emotionally strong, how she is so dependent on Edward. It aggravates me that he is her whole world that she is nothing without him, it pisses me off because I feel that a woman doesn’t need a man to have worth and thus why I am also glad that I read this book because it serves as a marker of my own maturity and a reflection of what I don’t want a woman to be which is helpless without a man. I mean honestly you don’t see Joan of Arc withering away because of her obsessive love over a man.
