Damn! So much for blogging for 30 days straight… Anyhoots lets go straight to the book tag!
This book tag was created by Farah from The Farah Project.
NOPE: Ending > A book ending that made you go NOPE either in denial, rage or simply because the ending was crappy
The Terror by Dan Simmons. It was more like I did not like the second half of the book all the way to the ending because the first half leaned more towards psychological horror/thriller that just tickled my bones and then out of nowhere (an exaggeration but whatever) the latter half became this monster horror fest that I was just not into because throughout the whole book everything was so realistic that you start to wonder is it the crew mates going insane? Is there really a monster? So I personally preferred the ending to match up with the earlier tone of the book which was psychological horror/thriller because that my friends is far more horrifying than anything on Earth especially if you know the shit that went down in this book.
NOPE: Protagonist > A main character you dislike and drives you crazy
I honestly can’t think of any book characters to tell you the truth the only one that comes to mind is Rey from Star Wars. Lord do I hate that character! I hate her with such zest! It’s like okay I get it you’re a woman but you being a woman does not magically make you this incredible super powered being out of bloody nowhere!!!! I seriously hope the new Star Wars movie redeems itself because I really like Kylo Ren. Rey is like this annoying mosquito in your room when you’re trying to sleep but it keeps bugging you but you can’t kill it… yet.
NOPE: Series > A series that turned out to be one huge pile of NOPE. After you’ve invested all of that time and energy on it or a series you gave up on because it wasn’t worth it anymore.
The Heroes of Olympus series killed me man. This series just killed any enthusiasm I had for any other series ever. I invested so much time, energy and money and feelings into it to only be so sorely disappointed by how juvenile the plot and writing was. I kept trudging on thinking maybe there will be salvation at the end of this very long road but alas no. There was no salvation. The series has traumatized me so much that I just CANNOT bring myself to invest in another series.
NOPE: Popular pairing > A ship you don’t support
Yoon Bum and Sungwoo from the Korean Manga, Killing Stalking by Koongi. If you have read the manga, I don’t even need to explain why I like this pairing but I also DO NOT support it. The mental and physical abuse… man
NOPE: Plot twist > A plot twist you didn’t see coming or didn’t like
This plot twist comes from Kill The Father by Sandrone Dazieri. Now two years later I do realize that the plot twist isn’t new or groundbreaking but the repercussions of that one plot twist at the end just makes me think of how it effed up the protagonist man.
NOPE: Protagonist action decision > A character decision that made you shake you head NOPE
NOPE: Genre > A genre you will never read
Probably sci-fi and maybe YA. No particular reason really I just don’t read these genres that much or at all.
NOPE: Book format > Book formatting you hate and avoid buying until it comes out in a different edition
NOPE: Trope > A trope that make you go NOPE
Love at first sight. Romanticizing abusive relationships AND NOT ACKNOWLEDGING THAT SHIT IS ABUSIVE and Mary Sue characters… It’s you Rey. I’m watching you!
NOPE: Recommendation > A book recommendation that is constantly hyped and pushed at you that you simply refuse to read
Anything written by Cassandra Clare and Sarah J. Maas. Sorry.
NOPE: Cliche/Pet peeves > A cliche in writing pet peeve that always makes you roll your eyes
NOPE: Love interest > The love interest that’s not worthy of being one. A character you don’t think should have been a viable love interest
Scorpius Malfoy and Rose Weasley. I need not say more.
NOPE: Book > A book that shouldn’t have existed that made you say NOPE
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. I can’t.
NOPE: Villain > A scary villain/antagonist you would hate to cross and would make you run in the opposite direction
Can I say lack of knowledge or foresight? I am thinking more in line of how the girls in the book The Radium girls didn’t know what was happening to them. All they knew was that they’re in pain and that they’re dying. That’s scary. Not knowing what is happening to you.
NOPE: Death > A character death that still haunts you
NOPE: Author > An author you had a bad experience reading for and have decided to quit
I would say Stephen King and Robert Gailbraith. Stephen King because his writing style is just not for me and Robert Gailbraith because their plot in their books are just so convoluted FOR NO ABSOLUTE REASON!
Okay it is supposed to be a BookTuber book tag but I liked the questions so HERE WE GO!
The Boujee Book(tuber) Tag is created by Olive on the channel abookolive. Do check her channel out. I haven’t done book tags in so long hope you guys enjoy!
What is your average monthly budget for books?
To be honest I don’t have a monthly or even an annual budget for books and this can be disastrous in two ways. One is where I go absolutely bananas at book sales such as Big Bad Wolf Sale and just buy EVERYTHING I want to my hearts content then suffer the consequence for the next few months or I but no books at all and just borrow stuff from the library or at worst read ebooks I requested and was approved on from Netgalley.
What’s the most you’ve ever spent in a bookstore?
On my own money its about RM 200-ish. On my Mom’s money when I was a teen, its RM 500-ish.
Are you willing to pay full price for a brand new release, or will you wait until you have a coupon or there’s a sale?
This highly depends on two things.
- How much do I want to read that book
- My current budget and whether I am willing to forgo food for the month
The second reason is painful because books in Malaysia is crazy expensive especially if they’re not locally written books. Like I am not spending RM 50 on a 300 page book when I know for a fact I will finish that book in a day.
But most of the time I don’t really want to read books so much that I am willing to spend money on them anymore especially if they are a series. I just can’t imagine spending my hard earned money that way knowing I can just make myself read ebooks. I am not a huge ebook person but hey free books are free books and when you’re strapped for cash you will read anything you can have for free.
Although I must say if I REALLY want to read that book I will buy it. It’s just that recently books I have waited on to read and paid for with my wage which was earned through blood sweat and tears and then the book is a read I did not enjoy. You can say a part of me was traumatized and has since refused to buy new books unless I am ABSOLUTELY sure I will like it.
I am looking at you Cursed Child and fourth installment of Robert Gailbraith’s book of which I forgot its title
Would you rather buy one new book or several less expensive used copies?
This one is easy! SEVERAL LESS EXPENSIVE USED COPIES DUHHHHHH!
My shelf now are primarily made up of books I buy in used book sales unless I buy them at Big Bad Wolf book sales then yeah those are new but most of the time I just squirrel my way to the used books section and hopefully find one book I enjoy. The Asian in me is like why would I buy one book that cost RM 30 when I could buy 5 books for the same price??
What do you think is a reasonable price for a new hardback book? A paperback? An eBook?
Hardback: RM 60 – RM 120
Paperback: RM 35 – RM 50
Ebook: RM 20 max
Hardback and paperback the prices I think should reflect on how thick they are and how beautiful the book cover is.
Is a signed book worth more to you? How about a first edition?
To be honest no. I don’t care. Unless I get to meet my fav historical romance authors in real life then DAMN STRAIGHT I’ll care but if not. Nah, I am pretty ambivalent over it.
What is your most valuable book (sentimental or actual value)?
My books are all only sentimental in value but my most valuable books are my Harry Potter series and also books gifted to me by friends or family members.
Will you pay more for a cover or edition you like better?
Definitely pay more for an edition I like better. I am already paying for this shit I might as well go all out and get the ones I like.
What physical characteristics does a good quality book have?
You know a book is from a good publishing company when everything just looks smooth. Like everything flows you know? From the fonts of the title that matches the color of the cover page. The coverpage art suits the genre of the book. I have no idea how to explain what is in my mind but basically you don’t get wonky fonts or models posing for the coverpage looking as still as a plywood board. Ya feel?
If you won the lottery, what bookish things would you do with the money?
I would buy books that I want basically. Its not exciting but I haven’t bought books that I wanted in a long time.
BONUS: Give us an image (actual or mental) of your dream home library!
This is how I want my reading space to be. With a huge ass window that can open wide, which obviously have safety stuff installed so I wont fall out of it but yeah basically.
The movie for ‘To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before’ just came out on Netflix and it is based on the book written by Jenny Han which I was completely obsessed about when I finished reading it. So, to commemorate this book to movie adaptation I decided to do a book tag.
This fun book tag was created by Frankinesce so do check out her YouTube channel!
Kenny from camp AKA your first book love
John Ambrose McClaren AKA the book that got away
Lucas from Homecoming AKA your GBF (your favorite LGBTQ+ character of book)
Josh Sanderson AKA the book next door (a book you’ll love no matter forever)
Peter Kavinsky AKA your one true love
I review more and less books
Confusing I know. I review more books from Netgalley but review less hardcopy books from libraries or my own books unless I run out of reviews for my Netgalley books then any draft reviews from other sources will do to keep my blog up and running. I do this not because I dislike reviewing hard copy books but more because with Netgalley it gives me a chance to up my rating whereas other sources they don’t so I have no obligations.
I read more books but less diverse ones
Pre-Netgalley I only read books from the library because I didn’t have enough money to buy new books, at least not fully priced ones, which forced me to read diversely; murder mysteries, contemporary, middle grade, historical fiction, non-fiction, biographies, self-help, art, you name it but now… now I just read a lot of historical romance with dashes of other genres. It kills me but at the same time historical romance has become my comfort zone, it is so easy to read and digest. There is no nuance to it, I don’t need to think I can just ride the wave of feels. I can read 3 in a day man whereas other genres it takes me DAYYYYSSSSSSS… WEEKS to finish.
I buy less books but my TBR pile is off the charts
Surprising I know! I swear after Netgalley my need to buy physical books has lessened immensely but at the same time I can’t control myself from clicking that request button on Netgalley thus why my rating has NEVER been above 37-38%. Every time I manage to read a ton of Netgalley books I request twice as more. It’s a problem I know.
I made friends
Not a lot but that’s just because I am not the type to comment on other bloggers post, it’s more towards I don’t know what to say other than saying it was a great review or great post or that I found the post insightful. I am not the best at any sort of banter but anyways yeah, I made friends and it’s nice when I have a post up and I have actual readers who read my stuff consistently. It’s flattering. My previous blog had no audience.
I feel guilty re-reading books
When you have a Netgalley TBR pile as high as your roof that NEEDS to be read and reviewed you would feel guilty of re-reading too. I only re-read Harry Potter recently because my reading slump due to a slew of unfortunate books has dampened my optimism in reading.
Hey guys! Thought I’d change the format for today’s blog post. Hope you enjoy the video 😀
Hey ho! Since it is Valentine’s day I decided to do an anti-Valentine’s day book tag (this has nothing to do with me being single for what is now my 7th year… *internally crying at the injustice*). This book tag was created by Maya at Maayasaurus, so do check her channel out.
So, how this book tag works is that you answer 6 questions and you pair it with a song that either suits your book or a book that was inspired by the song you chose. My playlist isn’t that different from Maya’s own playlist because my taste in music as well as books isn’t diverse enough apparently and thus….
A book featuring a toxic or abusive relationship
I chose It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover and Once and Always by Judith McNaught because both these books have very abusive relationships. In Colleen Hoovers book the protagonist knows its a problem and knows it shouldn’t be tolerated whereas in Judith’s book the abusive behavior is tolerated all because the hero has a sad sob story *barfs*.
A murder mystery or relationship featuring cheating
Song: It Wasn’t Me by Shaggy
Five Little Pigs by Agatha Christie goes to this category and it fits both the topics because obviously its a murder mystery AND it is about this dude who is a serial cheater who drops dead and a re-investigation ensues years after he dies.
Your favorite non-canonical OTP
I feel like Cormoran Strike and Robin Ellacott from the Cormoran Strike series by J.K. Rowling should be together. They suit each other. They accept each other also Robin was having doubts with her marriage (Career of Evil) and I honestly have no idea why she married that douchebag she calls husband I will never know and ugh Strike get some balls and just gooooooo and get her!!!!!
A bookish guilty pleasure
Yeah you guys know my bookish guilty pleasure is my obsession with historical romance. I know I should diversify my reading. Read something else other than historical romance. Heck even read crime fiction but it is hard. They disappoint me man with historical romance. They’re my safety cocoon they rarely disappoint and if they do its usually just a fluke. It happens.
A book completely devoid of romantic relationships
Song: F*ck You by Lily Allen
Kill The Father by Sandrone Dazieri was chosen because I don’t think there is any romantic relationships in this book. I honestly can’t remember the specifics of this book just that the ending had me SHOOK!
A book featuring self-love or a fiercely independent protagonist
Okay for this one I chose three protagonist and I will be far more concise here than in my video.
- Sabriel (Old Kingdom Series by Garth Nix) – I love how she knows what she wants, she knows how to get it and she is relatively unfazed by her surroundings. Yes, you can say she is bland and say she is generic but for a person who can’t get their shit together *COUGHS*ME*COUGHS* this girl is GOALS!
- Lisbeth Salander (Millenium Series by Stieg Larsson) – I love Lisbeth because she is bad ass, a genius, a rebel, misfit and an outcast yet she is also kind, sweet, caring, she got her heart broken in the first book when she realized Mikael didn’t feel for her how she felt for him. She was weak and got sexually assaulted and yet she became strong and got her revenge not only on her perpetrator but everybody that did her wrong. She plays chess with her old caretaker (I forgot the term used in the book) and for me she is so fascinating at how she can be everything yet nothing at the same time. Ya feel me?
- Alanna (The Song of the Lionness by Tamora Pierce) – I read this series when I was a teenager and I just rooted for Alanna all the way. She is just this girl who just wanted to be a Knight. That is it. She worked her ass off to be a Knight. She trained and trained and trained. She gave no excuses for herself. Her being smaller than the others didn’t faze her. I also liked how her relationships evolved over time and how it was okay to have more than just one lover in your lifetime. Your first lover doesn’t have to be THE ONE. Like all her relationships didn’t deter her or distract her from her main focus which was to be a BAD-ASS-KNIGHT!!!!!!
With all bookish tags I was not tagged by anyone (yet again) but I thought this was a fun lil’ tag so here we gooooo…. by the way I read this post on Confessions of a Readaholic so defo check them out.
How long have you been a blogger?
For this blog I think its been over a year now. This is my second blog actually. I bailed on my first one because I had absolutely ZERO followers and if you think my reviews/rants on this blog is long, you have yet to read my reviews on my old blog. FOUR POSTS LONG just on ONE historical romance book. Just one book. Let’s just say I was insane.
At what point do you think you will stop?
Probably never. I like ranting about books WAYYYY too much which is why I prefer my blog over my booktube channel. I can edit and post immediately.
What is the best part?
I don’t have to worry about censoring myself or worrying about whether the post is too long or what not. I also can read about any books I want be it erotica, historical romance, classics, or thrillers there is no judgement and the ultimate best part is when another reader also read the same book and they comment on my post and we discuss about it. BEST FEELING EVER!
What is the worst part?
When I slack off posting and postpone my reviews up to the point I cannot even remember why I liked/disliked a book other than that not so much. I’m pretty laid back with this blog. If it doesn’t get the feedback I wanted it to then its no biggie.
How long does it take you to find/create pictures to use?
Within 5 minutes because I mostly use pictures I get from either Goodreads or the publishers themselves if I am invited for a book blog tour and lots and lots of MEMES and GIFSSSSS!!!!
I think once I have more free time I would probably make my own pictures which would take longer but so far I’m content.
How long does it take you to prepare a post?
If I just finished reading a book and I immediately feel like writing it, I can finish the post within half an hour to an hour.
How do you feel about the book blogger community/culture?
I like it actually. Book bloggers I follow are really cool and nice people whom I’d love to meet in real life and so far I haven’t had any negative encounters with any book bloggers so pretty happy with the community.
What do you think one should do to have a successful/blog?
I think my thoughts on this one would be that the blogger definitely should do it because they want to out of the sheer pleasure of posting something regardless of whether the post will/will not have an audience. Once you do something because you genuinely want to it will in turn become a passion project which will snowball into posting consistently, having new content you want to discuss about and etc. Also, when you blog about something because you want to it will also make you want to improve yourself which will obviously reflect in your blog posts. Weird how one small thing can affect so many other things eh?
Helloooo! I am actually not too sure if I had done this tag before but if I did what is the harm in doing it again.
I shall thank nobody for tagging me because *sobs* no one did.
- Name a cartoon that you love
I love Princess and The Frog and also Mulan because I love hard working bad ass women who don’t necessarily use only their beauty to get what they want. I used to like The Little Mermaid but as I got older I seriously cannot relate. The Amazing World of Gumball is just a legit funny stupid cartoon that makes me laugh.
- What is your favorite song right now.
I am really into Kim Petras – I don’t want it at all and also Boys by Charli XCX. I feel like the song Boys seriously describe me as a person. I’m just generally a boy crazy person.
- What could you do for hours that isn’t reading
Aside from sleeping. I could crochet and simultaneously watch Youtube unsolved for hours or anything on Youtube that involves mysteries or murder.
- What is something you love to do that your followers would be surprised by
I am not too sure really. I am an open book so I don’t have many things that I do that I don’t tell somebody.
- What is your favorite unnecessarily specific thing you want to learn about
Calligraphy. I want to learn more about calligraphy. I want to write BS letters to people using beautiful handwriting.
- What is something unusual that you know how to do?
I can kill centipedes, cockroaches, scorpions and occasionally snakes when they invade my house. Does that count?
- Name something you made last year and show us if you can
I made AMIGURUMI!!!!!!!
- What is your most recent personal project?
Crocheting as much amigurumis as I can to sell em and also having a dash of calligraphy on the side for my calling/business cards
- Tell us something you think about often?
The meaning of our existence and life on this planet. Why is there so much hate in the world when we are just specks when put into perspective of how huge the galaxy is and occasionally also why do serial killers kill and how do they avoid getting caught? Like the Zodiac killer and such.
- Give us something that is your favorite, but make it oddly specific
I love the smell of freshly cut grass and the smell of rain and also I remember people by their teeth. So when I recognize someone it’s more of “I’ve seen your teeth somewhere.. but where?” type situation.
- Say the first thing that pops into your head?
WHICH GAME OF THRONES THEORY IS COMING TRUE???? Is it the one where Bran is the Night King and the three eyed Raven? Is it that the Night King will have a Night Queen??? Dany becoming the mad Queen??? Jon Snow is the Azor Ahai??? WILL JON SNOW BEND THE KNEEE???? WILL THERE BE A WHITE WALKER DRAGON THING?????!!!!
And that is it for this book tag. Hope you enjoyed the post and pray that I binge watch GoT before the last episode of season 7 comes out.
Okay haven’t done a book tag in awhile. Again, I wasn’t tagged by anybody sadly. This tag was created by GirlReading.
I actually did my own version on youtube and the link is here.
But for fun I will also post my answers on my blog so here we go.
- E-book or physical book?
- preferably physical but I have trained myself to tolerate e-books due to my dwindling funds in the book buying department and hey in Netgalley I get my books for free even if I have to give up paperbacks for it. Free books man what more do you need?
- Paperback or hardback?
- paperback. Its more practical and doesn’t hurt as much when it falls on your face.
- Online or In-store book shopping?
- In-store book shopping because I have a fear that if I buy a book online it will come all dented and shit or torn or whatever.
- Trilogies or Series?
- Trilogies because its kinder on my wallet but series if its really good and its worth investing my money in.
- Heroes or villains?
- Villains definitely. Without a good villain the hero is essentially nothing.
- A book you want everyone to read?
- The Godfather by Mario Puzo. Why? Because its my favourite non-historical romance/fantasy/thriller/murder mystery book and because its good.
- The last book you finished?
- How To Marry a Marquess by Stacy Reid. The review will be awhile coming so don’t hold your breath.
- The Last book you bought?
- I honestly cannot remember but maybe Drood by Dan Simmons. (Is my answer the same as my video counterpart???)
- Weirdest thing you’ve used as a bookmark?
- The sticker from sanitary pads, a whole ball of yarn, a sock, a spoon, anything on hand really.
- Used books: Yes or No?
- YES!!!!! Most my books now are used books. No money man. Beggars can’t be choosers or however that line goes
- Top three favorite genres?
- Historical romance, anything related to murders and thriller
- Borrow or buy?
- Borrow? Does borrowing from the library count?
- Characters of plot?
- Now in the video I said plot but now looking back I would say characters.
- Long or short chapters?
- Short chapters because I need to feel that sense of achievement.
- Name the first three books you think of?
- My answer will be different from the video but who cares.
- Duke of Sin by Elizabeth Hoyt
- The Scot Beds his Wife by Kerrigan Byrne
- Avalon by Meg Cabot
- My answer will be different from the video but who cares.
- Our world or fictional worlds?
- Fictional worlds. I cant find a 6’1 Caucasian man with dark raven hair and steel grey eyes in Miri, Sarawak okay.
- Audiobooks: Yes or No?
- Yes, kills two birds with one stone. Gets my chores done and my reading done.
- Do you ever judge a book by its cover
- Yes, yes I do.
- Book to movie or book to TV adaptation?
- TV adaptation because I feel like the standard has gone higher and budget bigger. I mean look at GoT.
- A movie or TV-show you prefer to its book?
- Series or standalones?
- I prefer standalone but if the series is good then why not.
So, that is my Rapid Fire Book tag questions and answers.
